Twenty
one credit unions and the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates were all
represented at the Georgia Marketing Council's latest meeting held
in Callaway Gardens on Friday, May 2, 2003. Complete with an excellent
speaker and wonderful accommodations, the meeting proved to be a
great success!
The annual spring
meeting began the night before as many of the council members met
for dinner at the Piedmont Dining Room located within the Southern
Pine Conference Center.
The Program
Coordinator of the Georgia Marketing Council, Kelly Garmon, opened
the official meeting on Friday morning with a welcome, introductions
then idea share. Many great ideas were shared by marketers to include
Madge Brady, Katie Sweeney, Kelly Garmon, Sharon Cook and Dawn White.
Following the idea share, Kelly introduced the meeting speaker,
Myra McElhaney.
Myra
McElhaney is President of McElhaney & Associates, a company that
provides speaking and training to organizations. She specializes
in helping companies to improve workplace relationships. Clients
rely on Myra to provide a fresh perspective and vivid insights.
Simply, she's a funny lady with ideas that work! Myra has appeared
on WSB-TV in Atlanta and WKMX Radio in St. Louis. Her advice has
been quoted in many publications including Investor's Business
Daily, Selling Power magazine, and McCall's magazine.
Myra is author of Mama Always Says and co-author of Reach
For The Stars and Exceptional Accomplishment.
Myra led us
through an in-depth discussion of how to "Present with Pizzazz."
To start off the discussion, Myra gave us four basic rules to remember
when presenting. They are: 1. Perfect is boring! 2. Personality
is interesting. 3. Pauses are powerful. 4. Fun enhances learning.
Myra went on
to explain some important items to remember when giving your presentation.
One of the worst things you can do in a presentation is offend
the audience. The best thing is to have the audience leave
your presentation feeling good. To support some of these items,
Myra had all participants divide into groups and make a list of
their likes and dislikes of presenters. The groups developed the
following lists:
Likes:
- People that
don't talk down to the audience.
- Use of tonality
and expression.
- Confidence.
- Energy.
- Memorable
presentations.
- Humor.
- Audience
participation and activities.
- Speakers
who believe in their message.
- Speakers
who listen and stay on time/target.
Dislikes:
- Monotone
speakers.
- Annoying
voices.
- Fidgety speakers.
- Speakers
who put audience members on the spot.
- Speakers
who stray from the topic.
- Speakers
who don't move around while talking.
- Speakers
who go over the time limit.
In
preparing for a presentation, people should set goals for the presentation.
For example, always set the tone for your presentation with the
following: state a purpose what you would like the audience
to know, understand your audience
Who are they? Why are they here? How many will be here? What do
they need from you? Why should they care about your message? And
how can you connect your message to them?
Introductions
should be memorable. Qualify yourself with credentials, state why
you are there, what you are speaking about and how you can connect
to the audience. Then add 1 or 2 personal things or hobbies that
will help the audience be more comfortable with you and feel connected
to you.
Be
very conscientious when using visual aids (flip charts
don't turn back on the audience while reading. Rather look, then
turn and read aloud to the audience).
