Georgia Marketing Council Meeting, April 29-30, 2004

Over 40 credit union Marketing and Business Development Professionals from Georgia, South Carolina and Poland attended the Georgia Marketing Council's latest meeting held in Charleston, S.C., on Friday, April 30, 2004. Complete with an excellent speaker and wonderful accommodations, the meeting proved to be a great success!

The annual spring meeting began the night before as many of the council members met for dinner at Charleston Crab House. With Waterfront dining, the Charleston Crab House offers one of the best views on the famous Intracoastal Waterway at the James Island location in Charleston, SC.

GMC President Kelly Garmon opened the official meeting on Friday morning with a welcome and introduction of the GMC Board of Directors. John O’Hare then led attendees in a game of BINGO to ‘break the ice.” After the ice breaker, our guest speaker, Steve Gilliland of Performance Plus Professional Development, Inc., began his discussion of Achieving More Together.

Steve Gilliland is considered to be one of the most sought-after speakers in America. He is the bestselling author of a new book entitled “Enjoy the Ride” and is featured in the book “Conversations on Leadership” with Tennessee Head Football Coach Phillip Fulmer. His colorful background includes Major League Baseball, broadcasting, and eleven years of corporate management on three different levels. He is the founder and CEO of Performance Plus Professional Development, Inc. and is recognized by the Pittsburgh Business Times as one of the top training companies in Western Pennsylvania. His recent audiences include the United States Marine Corps, Alcoa, General Motors, Hilton Hotels, Merck, Bank of America and now the Georgia Marketing Council of Credit Unions.

In “Achieving More Together,” Steve focused our discussions on developing, implementing and maintaining a team-oriented culture that improves employee and member satisfaction, increases your competitive advantage and ultimately drives results.

To achieve more together it is necessary to first CHANGE YOUR THINKING. “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Your beliefs affect your expectations which affect your attitude creating a certain behavior, in turn affecting your performance and finally the result!

Second, you must DETERMINE YOUR OUTCOME. “Happiness is not a state to arrive at but, rather, a manner of traveling.” Your talent determines if “you can do it”; your motivation determines if “you are willing to do it,” and your attitude determines “how well you do it.”

Third, PRACTICE THE FOUR C’S: Cooperation, Commitment, Contribution and Communication. “Care enough to know and know enough to care.”

And last, STAY FOCUSED. “Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off your goals.” You have to decide what is important and never take it for granted.
